Advent

Anticipate Jesus
Nov. 29, 2015 – Dec. 20, 2015

Advent, the new year of the liturgical calendar, is a season of anticipation and waiting. As we anticipate the coming of Christmas and the return of Christ, we also enter into a period of contemplation about what Jesus might be getting ready to do in our own lives, in our city, and in the life of our church.

Message line-up:

11/29
Waiting In Faith
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

An overview of the themes of Advent, based on the lectionaries passages assigned to this day.

Jeremiah 33:14-16; Psalm 25:1-10; 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13; Luke 21:25-36
12/6
Refined Repentance
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

John the Baptist prepared the way for people to receive Jesus by calling them (and us) to repentance. It is through our repentance that we allow God to refine us into people who overflow with love.

Malachi 3:1-4; Luke 1:68-79; Philippians 1:3-11; Luke 3:1-6
12/13
Fruit and Fire
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

The cry of John the Baptist in the wilderness includes a fiery sermon that should shock us out of our complacency. But it also offers an intriguing, if confusing, allusion to 1 Chronicles 21.

Zephaniah 3:14-20; Isaiah 12:2-6; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:7-18
12/20
He Has, and He Shall
Pastor Scott Austin
Listen

On this final Sunday of Advent, we are presented once again with the tension between what God has done, and what he shall do. Two phrases repeated in this week’s readings, he has and he shall, form a dual refrain that shapes our faith in Jesus today and in the future.

Micah 5:2-5a; Luke 1:46b-55; Psalm 80:1-7; Hebrews 10:5-10; Luke 1:39-45
12/24

Pastor Scott Austin
